Zu zwei Liedern der portugiesischen Band Madredeus / On two Songs by the Portuguese Band Madredeus
Im dritten Themenblock des musikalischen Adventskalenders auf LiteraturPlanet geht es um die Frage, wie aus dem konsequenten „Nein“ zum Krieg ein ebenso konsequentes „Ja“ zum Leben werden kann – also um die Ermöglichungsbedingungen dauerhaften Friedens. Den Anfang machen heute zwei Lieder der portugiesischen Band Madredeus.
Wenn der Krieg jede Erinnerung an den Frieden auslöscht
In ihrem Lied Os senhores da guerra (Die Herren des Krieges) entwirft die portugiesische Band Madredeus ein akokalyptisches Szenario:
Draußen vor den Toren der Stadt lagern die Herren des Krieges. Trunken von ihrer eigenen Macht stimmen sie ihr Triumphgeheul an, das alles unter sich begräbt.
Nicht nur die Männer im Inneren der Stadt werden ihm zum Opfer fallen. Auch die Erinnerung an den Frieden, das bloße Gefühl dafür, was „Frieden“ bedeutet, wird davon hinweggefegt.
Kontemplation als Gegengift zum Krieg
Ist also alles verloren? Gibt es keinerlei Hoffnung mehr auf eine friedlichere Welt?
Doch, die gibt es. Schließlich trägt das Album, auf dem sich der Song findet, den Titel O Espírito da Paz (Der Geist des Friedens). Dementsprechend finden sich darauf auch andere Lieder, die sehr wohl Wege aufzeigen, wie der Weg zum Frieden doch noch erfolgreich beschritten werden kann.
Am deutlichsten kommt dies vielleicht in dem Song As cores do sol (Die Farben der Sonne) zum Ausdruck. Darin wird eine Abendstimmung beschrieben, in der das Ich durch die Stille und das zauberische Zwielicht der Dämmerung in einen Zustand der Kontemplation hinübergleitet.
Das Fundament dauerhaften Friedens
Ein solcher – auch von der meditativen Musik evozierte – Zustand ist es, in der sich der „Geist des Friedens“ am unmittelbarsten offenbart. Übertragen auf eine allgemeine Lebenseinstellung, bedeutet er, dass die Haltung des aggressiven Beherrschenwollens einem Gefühl für die zerbrechliche Schönheit der Schöpfung bzw. allgemein des Lebendigen weicht.
Dieses Gefühl zu verstetigen, erscheint als beste Voraussetzung dafür, die menschliche Aggressions- und Destruktionsneigung einzudämmen. Die Zusammenarbeit von Völkern und Einzelpersonen in internationalen Organisationen reicht dafür nicht aus. Selbst völkerrechtlich verbindliche Vereinbarungen können – wie wir in diesem Jahr wieder schmerzlich erfahren mussten – nur als flankierende Maßnahme dienen.
Erst muss das Fundament gelegt werden, auf dem solche Maßnahmen ihre Wirkung entfalten können. Und dieses Fundament ist eben ein permanentes, in der alltäglichen Lebenseinstellung jedes Einzelnen verankertes Gefühl für die unvergleichliche Schönheit jedes einzelnen Lebens.
Über Madredeus
Die 1986 von Pedro Ayres Magalhães und Rodrigo Leão gegründete Band kombiniert klassische Musik mit volkstümlichen Elementen. Sie orientiert sich dabei an der Tradition des portugiesischen Fado-Gesangs sowie an mittelalterlichen Freundschaftsliedern (Cantiga de amigo). Außerdem werden Elemente des modernen Pop- und Elektrosounds in die Musik integriert.
Der Name der Band geht auf das Lissabonner Kloster Madredeus zurück, wo die Gruppe ihre ersten musikalischen Gehversuche unternommen und sich auch später immer wieder zu Proben getroffen hat.
Die Band konzentrierte sich bei ihren Auftritten von Anfang nicht auf Portugal, sondern trat auch immer wieder bei Festivals im Ausland auf. So nahm ihre Popularität rasch zu. Endgültig etablierte die Band sich in der internationalen Musikszene, als sie 1994 den Soundtrack zu Wim Wenders‘ Film Lisbon Story beisteuerte und darin auch mit Gastauftritten präsent war.
Nachdem Rodrigo Leão die Band bereits 1994 verlassen hatte, schied 2007 auch die charismatische Sängerin Teresa Salgueiro aus. Bandgründer Pedro Ayres Magalhães rief daraufhin ein neues Musikprojekt (A Banda Cósmica) ins Leben, mit dem er allerdings nicht an die Erfolge von Madredeus anknüpfen konnte.

On two Songs by the Portuguese Band Madredeus
The third thematic block of the musical Advent calendar on LiteraturPlanet revolves around the question of how the consistent „no“ to war can become an equally consistent „yes“ to life. In other words: What are the conditions that make lasting peace possible? The first songs today are by the Portuguese band Madredeus.
When War Wipes Out All Memory of Peace
In their song Os senhores da guerra (The Lords of War), the Portuguese band Madredeus creates an acocalyptic scenario:
Outside the gates of the city, the lords of war are camped. Drunk with their own power, they intonate their howls of triumph, burying everything beneath them.
Not only the men inside the city will fall victim to this eerie roar. Even the memory of peace, the very sense of what „peace“ means, will be swept away by it.
Contemplation as an Antidote to War
So is all lost? Is there no hope for a more peaceful world?
Sure, there is. After all, the album on which the song is included is entitled O Espírito da Paz (The Spirit of Peace). Accordingly, there are other songs on it that do show ways of how the path to peace can be successfully followed in spite of everything.
The song in which this is most clearly expressed is perhaps As cores do sol (The Colours of the Sun). It describes an evening mood with a perfect silence and a magical twilight allowing the self to glide into a state of contemplation.
The Foundation of Lasting Peace
Such a state – which is also evoked by the meditative music of the song – is the one in which the „spirit of peace“ reveals itself most directly. Transferred to a general attitude towards life, it means that the mindset of aggressively striving for domination gives way to a feeling for the fragile beauty of creation or of living things in general.
The best way to contain the human tendency to aggression and destruction is to perpetuate this feeling. The cooperation of nations and individuals in international organisations is not sufficient for this. As we have painfully learned again this year, even internationally binding agreements can at best serve as flanking measures.
First, the foundation must be laid on which such measures can unfold their effect. And this foundation is precisely a permanent sense of the incomparable beauty of every single life, embedded in the everyday attitude of each individual.
About Madredeus
Founded in 1986 by Pedro Ayres Magalhães and Rodrigo Leão, the band combines classical music with folk elements. It is inspired by the tradition of Portuguese fado singing as well as medieval friendship songs (Cantiga de amigo). Furthermore, elements of modern pop and electro sounds are integrated into the music.
The name of the band goes back to the Lisbon monastery of Madredeus, where the group took its first musical steps and later met repeatedly for rehearsals.
From the beginning, the band did not focus on Portugal for their performances, but also appeared repeatedly at festivals abroad. Thus, their popularity grew rapidly. The band finally established itself on the international music scene when it contributed the soundtrack to Wim Wenders‘ film Lisbon Story in 1994 and also made guest appearances in it.
After Rodrigo Leão had left the band in 1994, the charismatic singer Teresa Salgueiro also decided to go her own way in 2007. As a result, band founder Pedro Ayres Magalhães launched a new music project (A Banda Cósmica), with which, however, he could not match the success of Madredeus.
