Die neue literarische Reise auf LiteraturPlanet führt uns – passend zum Nebelmonat November – in das Reich des Todes. An drei Tagen der Woche werden Texte aus Ilona Lays dichterischem Zyklus Gesichter des Todes präsentiert.

Art und Aufbau des Zyklus

Volle fünf Jahre ist es nun her, dass Ilona Lay uns in einer Redaktionskonferenz auf dem Literaturplaneten ihren Textzyklus Gesichter des Todes vorgestellt hat.

Die Texte sind durchgehend dichterischer Natur, doch handelt es sich in den wenigsten Fällen um klassische Gedichte. Einige nähern sich dieser Form zwar an, doch haben wir es zumeist eher mit dichterischer Prosa oder Prosagedichten zu tun.

Der Zyklus unterteilt sich in drei Teile. Teil 1 beschäftigt sich mit dem Tod der Anderen, also mit der Außenperspektive auf den Tod. Hier geht es um die Frage, was es mit uns macht und wie es unser Welterleben verändert, wenn wir – um in der Sprache des Zyklus zu bleiben – das Gesicht des Todes in den Zügen uns nahestehender Menschen erkennen.

In Teil 2 geht es um den eigenen Tod, also um die Frage, wie uns das Sterbenmüssen im Laufe unseres Lebens begleitet und wie es unsere Weltwahrnehmung färbt.

In Teil 3 wandert der Blick gewissrmaßen in die Totale und betrachtet den Tod als allgemeinen Aspekt unserer Lebenswirklichkeit.

Tabu-Thema „Tod“

Warum wir den Zyklus damals nicht gleich veröffentlicht haben? – Kurz gesagt: Weil der Tod nun einmal nicht gerade ein  „hippes“ Thema ist.

Wir haben zwar spezielle Fest- und Gedenktage, bei denen der Tod im Mittelpunkt steht. Im Grunde geht es dabei – wie an Halloween – aber eher darum, sich über den Tod lustig zu machen und ihm so seinen Stachel zu nehmen. Oder es handelt sich – wie bei Allerheiligen – um Formen einer ritualisierten Erinnerungskultur, die den Tod auf eine allgemeine Ebene heben und ihn so ebenfalls von uns fernhalten.

Der wirkliche Tod ist noch immer ein Tabu-Thema in unserer Gesellschaft. Er wird in Krankenhäuser und Pflegeheime abgeschoben und spielt in unserem Alltag praktisch keine Rolle. Selbst wenn wir ihm in Horrorbildern in Nachrichten und sozialen Medien begegnen, steht der Gruselfaktor im Vordergrund. Eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem eigenen Sterbenmüssen wird dadurch nicht bewirkt.

Das Glück und der Tod

Aber hätte das nicht erst recht ein Argument dafür sein müssen, Ilona Lays Zyklus umgehend zu veröffentlichen? – Von einem rein geistigen Standpunkt aus betrachtet, ist das fraglos richtig. Ein Planet aber kann nur dann hell scheinen, wenn das Licht der Sonne ihn trifft. Und dieses Licht ist im Falle eines Literaturplaneten nun einmal das Interesse des Publikums – das wir mit einem ganzen Zyklus über ein Tabu-Thema zu vergraulen fürchteten.

Also haben wir damals zu Ilona gesagt: „Schreib doch lieber mal was Postives – zum Beispiel einen Zyklus über das Glück!“

Und genau das hat unsere Hausdichterin dann ja auch zwei Jahre später getan. Ihre „Meditationen über das Glück“, denen sie den Titel „Oktober in den Bergen“ gegeben hat, sind ein Jahr darauf bei uns erschienen.

Ob die Dichterin uns damit entgegengekommen ist oder damals tatsächlich in einer glücklicheren Stimmung war als bei der Abfassung ihres Zyklus über den Tod, wissen wir zwar nicht. Klar ist aber: Die beiden Zyklen ergänzen sich gegenseitig. Sie beleuchten zentrale Aspekte unserer Existenz aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven.

Eine Reise für Wagemutige

Bleibt die Frage, warum wir nun eine Kehrtwende machen und das düstere Gegenstück zu den „Meditationen über das Glück“ doch an die interessierte Öffentlichkeit weiterreichen. Der Hauptgrund dafür ist, dass wir uns nicht das Recht anmaßen wollen, darüber zu entscheiden, welche Texte für andere Menschen eine Bedeutung haben.

Es mag zwar sein, dass der Großteil selbst der literarisch Interessierten um einen Zyklus, der ausschließlich um den Tod kreist, einen großen Bogen macht. Bei manchen könnte dieser ganz spezielle Totentanz jedoch aus biographischen Gründen oder schlicht aus einer Novemberlaune heraus trotz allem auf Interesse stoßen.

Deshalb wagen wir es, in diesem November – also ab nächster Woche – eine Reise in das Reich des Todes zu unternehmen. Pro Woche werden wir – jeweils dienstags und donnerstags – zwei Stücke aus dem Zyklus veröffentlichen. Hinzu kommt an unserem sonntäglichen Poetry Day jeweils einer der im engeren Sinne dichterischen Texte. Ende November stellen wir dann den gesamten Zyklus ins Netz.

Im Dezember folgt wieder unser musikalischer Adventskalender, der in diesem Jahr aus naheliegenden Gründen ganz dem Thema „Frieden“ gewidmet sein soll. A Journey into the Realm of Death

Ilona Lay’s Text Cycle Faces of Death

The new literary journey on LiteraturPlanet takes us – appropriately for the foggy month of November – into the realm of death. On three days of the week, texts from Ilona Lay’s poetic cycle Faces of Death will be presented.

Type and Structure of the Cycle

It is now a full five years since Ilona Lay presented her cycle of texts Faces of Death to us in an editorial conference on Planet Literature.

The texts are poetic in nature throughout, but in very few cases are they classical poems. Some approach this form, but for the most part we are dealing with poetic prose or poems in prose.

The cycle is divided into three parts. Part 1 deals with the death of others, that is, with the external perspective on death. The question here is what it does to us and how it changes our experience of the world when we – to remain in the language of the cycle – recognise the face of death in the features of people close to us.

Part 2 is about our own death, i.e. the question of how having to die accompanies us in the course of our lives and how it shapes our perception of the world.

In Part 3, the view moves into an overall perspective and contemplates death as a general aspect of our lives.

Taboo Topic „Death“

You want to know why we did not publish the cycle right away? – In short: because death is not exactly a „hip“ topic.

We do have special holidays and commemorative days that focus on death. But basically – like Halloween – they are more about making fun of death and thus taking away its sting. Or – as with All Saints‘ Day – they are forms of a ritualised culture of remembrance that shift death to a general level and thus also keep it away from us.

Real death is still a taboo subject in our society. It is relegated to hospitals and nursing homes and plays practically no role in our everyday lives. Even when we encounter it in horror images in the news and on social media, the focus is on the creepy factor. A confrontation with our own need to die is not brought about by this.

Happiness and Death

But shouldn’t that have been all the more an argument for publishing Ilona Lay’s cycle immediately? – From a purely spiritual point of view, that is unquestionably true. But a planet can only shine brightly when the light of the sun falls on it. And in the case of a literary planet, this light is the interest of the public – which we were afraid of scaring away with an entire cycle on a taboo subject.

So we said to Ilona at the time: „Why don’t you write something positive – for example, a cycle about happiness?“

And that is exactly what our sensitive lyricist did two years later. Her „Meditations on Happiness“, to which she gave the title October in the Mountains, were published by us the following year.

We don’t know whether Ilona met us with this halfway or whether she was actually in a happier mood than when she wrote her cycle on death. What is obvious, however, is that the two cycles complement each other. They explore central aspects of our existence from different perspectives.

A Journey for the Adventurous

The question remains why we are now taking a U-turn and releasing the gloomy counterpart to the „Meditations on Happiness“. The main reason is that we do not want to claim the right to decide which texts are meaningful to other people.

It may well be that the majority of even those interested in literature will give a wide berth to a cycle that revolves exclusively around death. For some, however, this very special Dance of Death could, for biographical reasons or simply out of a November whim, meet with interest in spite of everything.

So this November – that is, starting next week – we dare to take a journey into the realm of death. We will publish two pieces from the cycle per week – on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition, we will publish one of the poetic texts in the narrower sense every Sunday, on our Poetry Day.

December will see the return of our musical Advent calendar, which this year, for obvious reasons, will be devoted entirely to the theme of „peace“.
