Das Lied Valo tihkuu kaiken läpi (Das alles duchdringende Licht) der finnischen Band Paavoharju beschreibt eine Form der Katharsis: Indem die Seele sich von den äußeren Bildern löst, öffnet sie sich für den gestaltlosen Urgrund aller Bilder.

Ein Sprung ins Ungewisse
Eine junge Frau steht auf dem Flachdach eines Hochhauses. Der Blick fällt auf eine Reihe trostlos-grauer Wohnblöcke, die durch den wintergrauen Himmel noch trostloser wirken.
Was wird die Frau tun? Sie tritt einen Schritt vor, sie breitet die Arme aus … Sie wird sich doch nicht in die Tiefe stürzen?
Einen Moment später ist klar: Sie lässt sich nur in den Schnee fallen, der sich auf dem Dach aufgetürmt hat. Ein paar Augenblicke lang verharrt sie reglos, mit dem Gesicht nach unten, im Schnee. Dann erhebt sie sich wieder. Als der Blick auf ihre geröteten Wangen fällt, sieht es fast so aus, als würde ihr Gesicht von innen heraus leuchten.
Winterliche und sommerliche Versenkung
Dies sind die Bilder, mit denen der Videoclip das Lied Valo tihkuu kaiken läpi der finnischen Band Paavoharju untermalt. Der Text selbst scheint sich nicht auf einen Wintertag, sondern eher auf einen Sommerabend an einem See zu beziehen. Er erinnert an den kurzen Zwischenraum außerhalb der Zeit, wenn in der Dämmerung die Dinge transparent zu werden und einen Blick in ihr Inneres freizugeben scheinen.
Winter- und Sommersetting sind verbunden durch das Bild des Versinkens. Wie sich die junge Frau in dem Videoclip in den Schnee sinken lässt, ist in dem Liedtext von den Wellen die Rede, die sich über „den Spiegel der Seele“ breiten. In beiden Fällen geht es dabei um eine Form geistiger Hingabe, darum, sich in die Arme einer höheren, allumfassenden Macht fallen zu lassen.
Mystischer Kern des Liedes
In Videoclip und Liedtext wird damit auf unterschiedliche Weise eine Form innerer Versenkung beschworen, eine Meditation, durch die sich das Ich von der Welt der äußeren Erscheinungen löst. Das Bild des Versinkens im Schnee knüpft dabei durch die weiße Farbe der Flocken an den Gedanken der inneren Reinigung an. Eben diese wird in dem Liedtext unmittelbar angesprochen: Ziel ist es, die Seele von allen äußeren Bildern zu reinigen, damit sie frei wird für das gestaltlose Bild dessen, aus dem alle Bilder entspringen.
Der Text erinnert damit an mystisches Gedankengut, aber auch an fernöstliche Meditationspraktiken, bei denen ja ebenfalls die Befreiung des Denkens von allen äußeren Bildern angestrebt wird, als Voraussetzung für die Teilhabe an einer überpersönlichen und überzeitlichen Wirklichkeit.
Die Musik des Songs unterstützt diese meditative Zielrichtung durch eine entsprechend kontemplative Klangwelt. Diese zeichnet auch viele andere Lieder der Band aus, die 2005 von den Brüdern Lauri und Olli Ainala gegründet wurde. Nach großen Anfangserfolgen, auf die auch Tourneen im Ausland folgten, löste sich die Gruppe 2013 auf, trat aber seit 2018 wieder gemeinsam auf und brachte 2022 und 2023 auch zwei neue Alben heraus. Im Oktober 2023 verkündete die Band jedoch auf Facebook erneut ihre Auflösung.

The song Valo tihkuu kaiken läpi (The all-pervading light) by the Finnish band Paavoharju describes a form of catharsis: By detaching itself from external images, the soul opens itself to the formless source of all images.
The All-Pervading Light
Like the breath of the all-pervading air,
the Spirit wafts over the vast waters,
arousing in me a longing
for a longing.
Leaning branches
that stroke over the water
and blur my reflection on it,
behind which your figure appears.

A Leap into the Uncertain
A young woman stands on the flat roof of a high building. Her gaze falls on a row of bleak grey apartment blocks, which appear even bleaker against the grey winter sky.
What is the woman going to do? She takes a step forwards, she spreads her arms out … Surely she’s not going to throw herself into the depths?
A moment later we realise: she’s just going to let herself fall into the snow that has piled up on the roof. For a few moments, she remains motionless, face down in the snow. Then she rises again. When our gaze falls on her flushed cheeks, it almost looks as if her face is glowing from the inside out.
Wintry and Summery Immersion
These are the impressions that accompany the song Valo tihkuu kaiken läpi by the Finnish band Paavoharju in the video clip. The lyrics themselves do not seem to refer to a winter’s day, but rather to a summer evening by a lake. They are reminiscent of the brief intermediate space outside of time at dusk, when things seem to become transparent and reveal a glimpse of their interior.
Winter and summer settings are linked by the metaphor of sinking. Just as the young woman in the video clip lets herself sink into the snow, the lyrics of the song speak of the waves that spread across „the mirror of the soul“. In both cases, this involves a form of spiritual devotion, of letting oneself fall into the arms of a higher, all-encompassing power.
Mystical Core of the Song
In both the video clip and the lyrics, a special form of contemplation is evoked, a meditation that allows the ego to detach itself from the world of external appearances. In the video clip, the white colour of the flakes links the metaphor of sinking into the snow to the idea of inner purification. It is precisely this process that is directly addressed in the lyrics: the process of purifying the soul from all external images so that it opens up to the formless image of the one from whom all images emerge.
The lyrics are thus reminiscent of mystical concepts, but also of Far Eastern meditation practices, in which the liberation of the mind from all external images is also regarded as a prerequisite for participation in a suprapersonal and supratemporal reality.
The music of the song supports this meditative aim with a correspondingly contemplative sound world. This also characterises many other songs by the band, which was founded in 2005 by the brothers Lauri and Olli Ainala. After great initial success, followed by tours in Finland and abroad, the group disbanded in 2013, but has been performing together again since 2018 and released two new albums in 2022 and 2023. In October 2023, however, the band announced their break-up again on Facebook.
